ACFC Draws Lorain in US Open Cup

Akron City has drawn an away game against arch-rivals Lorain County in the opening round of the 2027 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup. The match will be played on Sunday, September 13 at ForeFront Field.

The U.S. Open Cup is a knockout (single elimination) tournament featuring teams from the professional leagues as well as select teams from the amateur/semi-pro leagues. It is the oldest national soccer competition in the US, and is the only time that amateur and professional teams meet on the pitch. Amateur/semi-pro teams may qualify for the final draw of the US Open Cup by participating in in a series of qualifying rounds.

The qualifying rounds are as follows:

Round One – September 12 & 13 (Akron plays Lorain on 9/13)
Round Two – October 3 & 4
Round Three – October 31 & November 1
Round Four – November 21 & 22

The final qualifying round (Round Four) determines the 16 teams that will enter the tournament proper. Those 16 teams will join 16 other amateur/semi-pro teams that qualify via other means and all will enter the tournament beginning in April 2027.

The Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup is in its 112th year, and this year’s qualifying round sees 155 teams competing for 16 qualifying spots.
